There is no doubt that cryptocurrency has traction in the financial world. As of the moment I'm writing this, Bitcoin alone has a market cap of nearly a trillion dollars. But crypto has also been encumbered with a steep learning curve. In addition to making an informed financial investment, crypto participants have needed to learn how to manage their crypto wallets, how to secure their currency holdings, and more.
When PayPal decided to start offering Bitcoin to its users, it became clear that crypto was here to stay (although at what valuation is anyone's guess). In any case, to celebrate the new year, and because it seemed like a fun exercise, I decided to buy some Bitcoin via PayPal.
So now we go into PayPal's ginormous discussion of fees. I want you to pay special note to the red arrow on the next screen because first, PayPal says there is a $0 fee to use most services. But just wait...
To be fair, most crypto exchanges have fees. But still, to say there are $0 fees for most features and then launch into pages of fees is, well, it's not even the worst part of this experience. That's still to come.
Those two values were taken about ten minutes apart. It took me about ten minutes to go through PayPal's process, and in that time period, the value of Bitcoin changed. This is not a stable currency. Just keep that in mind. Okay, here we go...
There is no monthly fee for the PayPal Zettle app. Merchants pay 2.29% + $0.09 per dipped or tapped transaction. Keyed transactions process at 3.49% + $0.09, and invoices sent from the app incur a 3.49% + $0.49 fee when the invoice is paid.
As a longtime user of PayPal who is now going elsewhere asap i thought investor relations should know why.on July 2nd in 98 degree heat after making sure that my account met all new security standards my account for my debit card was locked out when trying to fuel my vehicle on an account with over 600.00$ in it spent 1/2 hour on phone getting it fixed to be able to fuel my car and get home.On July 10th and after i have been unable to get PayPal here to work on any device mobile or otherwise this has led me to do a lot of things to keep my business from going under that i would rather not have to accepting checks taking only cash etc.Customer service has informed me that A mobile devices have to be at android version 4.4.2 so I have a new phone on the way if that is actually the problem why was this not put out in the documentation ?also was told by customer service that it was never and will never work on a desktop or laptop PC however up until June 30th it worked perfectly and the app is still on the Microsoft store being advertised as working on a PC but it does not work. So if anyone in investor relations is listening please pass this to the board of directors with the strongest possible recommendation from a FORMER customer that the CEO and director of IT be fired for this complete screw up!
I am a Square Up user and very happy with it. Using the chip and wifi reader works great and. funds are in my account the next day. In over 2 years , never had a problem. As a back up I started looking at Paypal Here POS system. I am a Paypal Biz user for over a decade and was happy with all services so far. Including debit card, Paypal Credit and so on. National and International. So I got an email offering the free magnetic card reader. Great fees, fast money transfer and all connected to my paypal account of 15 years or so. What can go wrong I thought? I still have many customers who have cards without chip and sometimes the chip does not work etc. So I ordered it as a back up options for my Food Truck. We sell German food. People come, pay , eat and leave. Paypal here worked great at first. A little bit more complicated than Square, but over all simple to use. Funds were in my account right away and I could use for business immediately with my card or transfer. Then I had a pretty good day and good sales. Just before our vacation :). However, funds were not available and still are not. Thinking it was a mistake I tried to get answer from Paypal Mobile, Paypal and Paypal Merchant services. The response I got was incredible. All of a sudden I was told that my funds were hold ( just like with most POS system) for up to 30 days! Which is literally wrong. None of the systems I used actually had this policy. Especially for Food Truck sales LOL. Anyway, I went back and forth with different customer service reps who repeated the same thing in their answers. Over a week has passed, no funds and no solutions and no suggestions. Now a complaint Literally assuming that Paypal Here POS is as fast as others especially after being with them for this extensive period of time without any problems, recalls , refunds and so on. Big mistake. I was a trusted Paypal customer for many years and I will remain a customer for years to come. However, the POS will. not be used again if you are looking for POS look somewhere else. Otherwise print all terms. For sure do not rely on customer service.
PayPal Here, despite all its focus on in-store transactions, hasn't really been available to buy in a US store -- that's been the domain of the seemingly ubiquitous Square reader. eBay's payment wing has at last established that retail beachhead through a deal with AT&T. About 1,800 of the carrier's stores are now carrying PayPal Here readers, and they'll keep the service's big rival from hogging the spotlight at a time when most aren't even aware that there's any competition. If you're still cynical, you can look at the AT&T move as a matter of convenience: at least this way, all your account headaches will come from one place.

My impression is that the PayPal push to get in on in-person card payments was largely a flop. PayPal is the big online payment brand. Square is the big in-person payment brand. Seems as though PayPal has decided to focus its efforts on online payments, where its brand is strong.
@MinnieMaudsAtticIf my previous post sounded at all disparaging of the Zettle reader, I did not mean it to be. I used it for a month long pop-up shop checkout last year and loved it. I just wanted to point out to the person who will be losing their ability to use their PayPal Here reader that there were some differences.
So sorry your preferred choice of providers was taken away @MinnieMaudsAttic . I am not expecting an increase in fees because of the competition from Square especially in the U.S.. PayPal Here was PayPal's answer to Square and it was a good reader and associated reporting. There are a few things with Zettle that I recognize have a more European take on things. Some things are being tweaked for the U.S. market. I have seen some changes in the past year that I have had my Zettle reader. I hope you have found another European provider that you like.
